AA 241A Assignment 2

Due Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009

1. Revise your design requirements from assignment 1 if necessary.

2. Develop a 'first cut' of the fuselage plan view (top view) of your selected aircraft. Select a reasonable scale so that the interior arrangement is visible without microscopy and dimension the drawing. Show the entire fuselage from nose to end of tail cone -- not just the cabin area. Include in the planview locations of emergency exits, lavatories, galleys, etc..

3. Show a typical cross-section with selected seat and aisle widths.

On a separate sheet show the supporting computations that allowed you to arrive at the required dimensions. (e.g. state the desired seat pitch, find the required nose and tail fineness ratios, etc.)

Hints: Remember that the nose fineness depends on the selected cruise Mach number, that all external lines should be smooth (no kinks), and that tailcone fineness must be sufficient to prevent separation. You will be developing a complete airplane drawing as we go along so you may want to work at a somewhat larger scale than is practical for weekly assignments. One idea is to draw the airplane so that it fits on an 11"x17" piece of paper, photo-reducing it on a photocopy machine to 8.5" x 11" to turn in. Carefully drawn work on normal size paper will also be acceptable. You may also use any CAD or drawing program with which you are familiar, but a hand-drawing is probably better if you are not adept at using a computer-based package. You may use the programs in the web-based text for reference, but your drawing and calculations should be done independently.
